Riparian Buffers as Bridges: Science, Stories & Stewardship

Riparian Buffers as Bridges: Science, Stories & Stewardship

Sharing knowledge is our forte, but wither wisdom? This workshop explores the synchronicity of science and the arts as different paths toward understanding the natural world and instilling a conservation ethic. We’ll focus on riparian buffers—protectors of aquatic ecosystems—through storytelling, activities, small-group discussion, brainstorming, a Power-point presentation on rivers and riparian buffers, and an optional field trip. Michael will also share Riparia’s River, his picture book about how children clean up their river by restoring riparian buffers (Tilbury House Publishers).

Riparian buffers are critical environments that form a natural bridge between terrestrial and aquatic environments and serve as important corridors for wildlife. Buffers prevent erosion, alleviate flooding, and serve as the last bastion protecting aquatic ecosystems from damage caused by non-point sources of pollution.

Themes addressed during this workshop:

Cultivating a Sense of Place—Storytelling—Community leadership—Outdoor classrooms—Citizen science programs—Investigating local ecosystems—Creating new solutions for a healthy future—Sustainable agriculture (management of riparian buffers)—Service learning—Collaborating to build strong communities—Multi-generational projects

A 1-1/2 hour workshop for teachers of children from grades 3-12,
(group size limit: 25).
